Today with a new English lesson that is about the kinds of sentences. In this lesson we will review the types of sentences and each type of them on a simple and easy scale with several illustrative examples.
At first, we need to
know that the sentence in English divided into Three types:
( Simple sentence – compound sentence – complex sentence ) and we will learn about the composition of each one and the differences between them.

First – Simple sentence
The simple sentence in
English is a short sentence where it consist of only one verb and also one
subject as well as it also express one idea. It is ( independent clause )
For examples:
- My friends study chemistry .
- Salma visits her nephew .
- Amir beats his brother .
Second –Compound sentence
And it's the opposite of
the simple sentence, so it's the longest where it is made up of two simple sentences, each one with a separate and relevant sentence, and
we connect them with one of the conjunctions such as ( and – but – or - ….. etc
)
And it consist of : (
Independent clause + conjunction + independent clause )
We will clarify more in
the following examples:
1-And
It is used to link two
sentences that are related to each other or similar in the meaning for examples:
⇛ Sandy is drinking coffee. ⇛ Shadi is drinking orange juice.
☑ Sandy is drinking coffee and Shadi is drinking orange juice.
2- But
It is used to link Two
different sentences or between them is a contradiction for examples:
⇛ My father is poor. ⇛ My uncle is too rich.
☑ My father is poor, but my uncle is too rich.
3- Or
It is used to link Two
sentences where there is an option such as:
⇛ You can watch the match. ⇛ You can watch the movie night.
☑ You can watch the match or you can watch the movie night .
So we're done from explaining the compound sentence and now we move to the Third and last type of sentence in English, which is the complex sentence.
Third – Complex sentence
This type of sentences
consist of independent clause then dependent clause with one of the
conjunctions which doesn't express the meaning or idea.
And its format as
following:
( Independent clause +
conjunction + dependent clause )
For examples:
- My mother runs fast when the phone rang.
- We didn't catch the plane because we were late in airport procedures.
- Do you know the doctor who performed the operation for your friend?
We need to mention that
we're linking Two sentences either with one of conjunctions such as ( as –
since – because – that – after – once –when – while – or – where …… ) or one of
relative pronouns such as ( that – whom – who – whose – which )
After learning about the types of the sentence in English and explaining each type we can now conclude our study today.
