Comparative and superlative adjectives

Today we talk about the comparison and superlative form in English, We’ll learn about their usage, how they form and all information around them.

Comparative and superlative adjectives

First: ( comarison formula)

We use this formula when we compare one person to another or animal to another or something to other thing …etc .

for examles:

  • I’m younger than Ehab.
  • The elephant is bigger than dog.

How to form Comparison formula?

1- In case of short adjectives such as (tall- strong - small - long), we add (er) to the adjective and use the word (than) after it.

for examples:

  • The lion is stronger than the elephant.
  • The orange tree is smaller than the mango tree.
  • I’m shorter  than my little sister. 
  • Hani is taller than his brother. 
  • Salma is fitter than her sister.

2- In case of long adjectives such as (expensive - popular - interesting), we use (more or less) before adjectives and the word (than) after them .

for examples:

  • Judo is the less popular than football.
  • Mohamed’ car is more expensive than my car.
  • Football is more interesting than tennis.
  • My mother is more beautiful than me.

Second: (superlative formula)

We use this formula when we compare one person with group of people or animal with many animals or something with many things ….etc.

As an examples:

  • The lion is strongest animals.
  • Rami is the fastest boy in the team.

How to form superlative formula?

1- In case of short adjectives such as (tall - short - fast), we add (est) to the adjective and use the word (the) before it.

For exxmples:

  • She is the oldest girl in the garden.
  • Marwa is the tallest one in our family.
  • My father is the kindest person in the world.
  • Giraffe is the longest  animal in the zoo.

2- in case of tall adjectives such as (beautiful - exciting - difficult), we use (the most or the least) before adjectives such as:

  • The white car is the most expensive car.
  • Handball is the least popular activity.
  • French exam was the most difficult exam.
  • Today is the most stressful day of the week.
  • This is the least expensive shirt i have.

Note

There are irregular adjectives, that not subject to these rules, and we’ll identify them in the following table.

  • Sami is better than Ahmed.
  • Arwa is the best player in this team.
  • This store is the worst one in the mall.
  • Aswan is  further than Cairo. 
  • This girl is worse than her friend.
  • Ahmed is the best in physics.
  • Salary less than monthly needs.
