The present continuous tense

Today we will explain a tense of important tenses in English which is the present continuous tense ,where we will know it in detail how it is formulated in various cases, when we use it and what words are indicative of its existence.

The present continuous tense

All this and more we will talk about in our lesson today, only all you have to do read the lesson to the end carefully and focused.

First: (its uses)

1- The present continuous tense always used to refer to an act or event that's happening right now. Such as:

  • Look , the monkey is jumping on the tree.
  • At this moment, my sister is playing the piano.

2- It is also used by writers in their writings and novels to give events a teaser and humorous character, and also helps readers to know when events take place. such as:

  • What's going on the room right now?! the curiosity will kill me.

3- Also you can use this tense to, deny doing something at the moment for example:

  • Now I'm not going anywhere.

4- It also used to speak about events and temporary actions, it does not care about the duration of the event whether it is short or long such as:

  • She's learning German right now.

5- Sometimes it can be used to express future plans such as:

  • I agreed with my friends that, we are going to the camp next Friday.

Now that we know the varied uses of the present continuous tense, now we will learn how to formulate it through the following table.

Notes

1 - If the verb ends with (e), we have to delete (e) before adding (ing) such as:

  • Make / making
  • Take /taking

2- If the verb has a vowel before the last letter, we double the last letter and then add ( ing ) such as:

  • Sit /sitting
  • Swim /swimming

3- If the verb has Two vowels , we add (ing ) without delete anything such as:

  • Gain /Gaining 
  • Feed / feeding 

Expressive words of the present continuous  tense

( Listen - look - now - at the moment - still )

for examples :

  • Look, our son is swimming.
  • Listen, the doctor is talking.

There are verbs  that never come in the present continuous tense because, it crosses a situation and not an event, it's not right to use it in the form of continuity such as:

( like - heat - love - fear )
