Singular and Plural Nouns

1. Singular Nouns:

A singular noun is used to talk about just one item, whether it is a person, animal, thing, or idea.

Examples:
Dog, cat, table, phone, hand, bottle.

2. Plural Nouns:

A plural noun is used to talk about more than one item, whether it is a group of persons, animals, things, or ideas.

Examples:
Dogs, cats, tables, phones, hands, bottles.

3. How to Form Plural Nouns:

a) Regular Plurals:
Most plural nouns are formed by adding -s to the singular form.
For example:

  • Apple → Apples
  • Animal → Animals
  • Step → Steps

b) Nouns ending in -s, -x, -z, -ch, or -sh:
In these cases, plural nouns are formed by adding –es to the singular form.
For example:

  • Box → Boxes
  • Dish → Dishes
  • Quiz → Quizzes

c) Nouns ending in a consonant + y:
Plural nouns are formed by changing the -y to -ies.
For example:

  • Baby → Babies
  • Party → Parties
  • City → Cities

d) Nouns ending in a vowel + y:
To form the plural, add -s.
For example:

  • Boy → Boys
  • Day → Days
  • Toy → Toys

e) Nouns ending in + o:
This category of nouns takes +es to form the plural.
For example:

  • Hero → Heroes
  • Potato → Potatoes
  • Tomato → Tomatoes

f) Nouns ending in + f or + fe:
To form the plural, we usually change the + f or + fe to + ve.
For example:

  • Thief → Thieves
  • Knife → Knives
  • Wife → Wives

g) Irregular Plurals:
Some nouns do not follow the regular rules. These plural nouns should be memorized.
For example:

  • Child → Children
  • Man → Men
  • Datum → Data

h) Nouns that don't change in plural form:
The plural form is the same as the singular one.
For example:

  • Fish → Fish
  • News → News
  • Salmon → Salmon
