1 _ The use of the present simple tense:
The Present Simple tense is used to talk about:
- Regular actions or events (habits or routines).
For example: She joins the yoga session every morning.
- Facts and truths that are always true.
For example: Water boils at 100 °C
- States or conditions that are not changing.
For example: I feel very sick. I should go to the doctor.
2 _ Forming the Present Simple:
🔷 Affirmative Sentences:
The structure of affirmative sentences in the present simple is the following:
- With the pronouns: I, you (singular), we, you (plural), they:
Subject + verb without to + the rest of the sentence .
For example:
_ I play football.
_ You sleep early. It is good for your health.
_ We enjoy traveling around the world.
- With the pronouns : He / She / It:
Subject + verb without to + s or es + the rest of the sentence.
For example :
_ Maria gets good marks in science.
_ Adam tries to convaince his friend giving him strong arguments.
_ He listens to my advices.
🔷 Negative Sentences :
To form negative sentences in the present simple , follow the rule:
- With the pronouns: I, you (singular), we , you(plural), they:
Subject + do not / don’t + verb without to + the rest of the sentence.
For example:
_ I do not eat vegetables.
_ You do not listen to music. I prefer podcasts.
_ They don’t want to have a lot of guests.
- With the pronouns: He / She / It:
Subject + does not / doesn’t + verb without to + the rest of the sentence.
For example:
_ Melissa does not win the price.
_ He doesn’t take his vitamins today.
_ Celia does not like tennis.
🔷 Question Form : to form a question in the present simple , use “do” or “does” at the beginning of the sentence .
- With the pronouns: I, you (singular), we, you(plural), they:
Do +Subject + verb without to + the rest of the sentence + ?
For example:
_ Do you like Jazz music?
_ Do you celebrate your birthday anniversary?
_ Do they practice sport regularly?
- With the pronouns: He / She / It:
Does +Subject + verb without to + the rest of the sentence + ?
For example:
_ Does she look like a princess in that dress?
_ Did he clean his room today?
_ Does Piter apply for this job?
Pay attention!
_ Add "es" for verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z:
• Kiss → Kisses
• Watch → Watches
• Fix → Fixes
_ Change "y" to "ies" for verbs ending in a consonant + y:
• Fly → Flies
• Study → Studies
