Indefinite pronouns in English

Today we’ll talk about kind of pronouns that are commonly used in English , which are indefinite pronouns.

Indefinite pronouns in English

we use these pronouns to talk about people, things and places, which we don’t name.

We use these pronouns in the same place , where we use the nouns in the sentence .

There are many pronouns of this kinds and we’ll recognize each of them and whenever we use them.

1- ( Everybody - everything )

We use (everybody -everything) to talk about all people or things in the positive sentences and questions .

For examples:

  • Everybody goes to the sports center on Sunday’ night .
  • You can sell everything you want through this app.
  • Is everything Ok?
  • That law applied to everybody .
  • Calm down everybody’ fine .
  • Everybody  is waiting for the manager .
  • Everybody  at the party is dancing.
  • Everything is fine with the project.

2- ( Somebody - something )

We use (something - somebody) to talk about things or people in general , places or things which we like . these words used only in positive sentences.

For examples:

  • Somebody first took me to the Pyramids and sphinx , when i was Six .
  • I bought something there last week .
  • Somebody went to the office .
  • I asked somebody on the metro for help .
  • Something unexpected happen .
  • My sister is thinking about something , i don’t know .

3- ( Anybody - anything )

We use (anything - anybody ) to talk about things or people in general / places or things which we like , these words used in questions and negative sentence.

For examples:

  • I don’t know anybody here.
  • We don’t usually meet anybody when we go there.
  • Can you see anybody in the park ?
  • Have you found anything in the office ?
  • Did yo find anything in this room ?
  • Salma doesn’t go out with anybody don’t know him .
  • I’m thirsty, is there anything to drink ?

4- ( Nobody - nothing )

We use ( nobody - nothing) to talk about no / many things or people in general , these words used in the positive sentences .

For examples:

  • Nothing worth it .
  • Sara found nobody there to help here .
  • I advised them and nobody responded to this advice .
  • Hana is really arrogant and nobody likes her .
  • Nobody on the team likes captain .

Note the following:

You need to know that , all previous pronouns are treated as singular , and we’ll understand more through the following examples :

  • There isn’t anything in the box. 
  • There is nothing in the box .
  • Is there anything i can do ?
  • Everybody here is welcomed .
  • Somebody wants to see you , mom .
  • Nobody knows what’s going to happen .
  • There is something wrong with the exam result.

Note that these pronouns consist of two words , but they write one word . 

- We can add (‘) to indefinite pronouns to refer to people’ belongings as in example:

  • Sara was given a room in someone’s studio .

And that’s why, we finished our lesson today, after we know indefinite pronouns and use both of them.
