Our lesson today is about one of the most mixed English grammar for many people, Today we will know the formula( gerund and infinitive) in English, We will recognize each formula in terms of formulation and usage, and we will clarify the separation between them.

Infinitives and gerunds in English

Just read the lesson to the end, so you can distinguish them and use each formula in the right place.

Read: Indefinite pronouns in English

First: Gerund

It's called the name derived from the verb and to put the verb in this formulation, we have to add (ing ) to the verb for examples:

  • Study / studying
  • sleep / sleeping

Note:

  • The verb ( go )

- when we use ( go ) in a formula (gerund ) , we don’t put after it (to), but we use gerund after ( go) directly without any things such as:

  • My husband go fishing tomorrow.

- Theses verbs ( enjoy - finish - keep - imagine - practice - like - dislike ) don’t come after these verbs or preposition ( to) but it comes gerund directly such as :

  • Janet practices playing the tennis.
  • Ahmed imagines winning the game .

Second: Infinitives

And we understand this formula from its own name, it's the infinitive of the verb , but we even use it in a formal way that becomes its formula ( to + verb )

- There are verbs need to coming (To) after it  such as (except - learn - need - want - hope - decide - learn - plan -ask) as the following examples:

  • Samir plans to play piano.

- If after the verb comes a noun then, we don’t need (to) because we use (to) If there is a verb immediately after the basic verb, and we will explain this in the following example:

  • Sandra learns French.

And now that we know the formula ( gerund - infinitive ) , and we understand the composition and use of both, it's now the role to recognize the difference  between them.

The differences between (Gerund - infinitive)

Both are used as a subject  at the beginning of the sentence but the most common and used is to use( gerund ) , The use of the infinitive as a subject  is more frequent in quotations and is not common in ordinary speech, it is of a formal nature.

For examples:

  • Drinking coffee in the morning is very important to me.

- If there is an adjective, we should use the (infinitive) such as:

  • These boys are difficult to teach

- the gerund always comes after a preposition  (About)

About to + gerund such as:

  • It is a book about growing up in village.

Also there is a big difference between them, Where the gerund  speaks facts or descriptions but the infinitive always used for advice and guidance.

Also we use the gerund when we To talk about something we do to enjoy, but we use the infinitive It's just something that's routine.

Add to your information:

The verb (stop) Its meaning and use when used  with the (gerund) from its meaning when used with infinitive.

With gerund (Stop + ing)

If used with gerund, it means stopping doing something or a habit such as:

  • My mother stopped going to the club.

With infinitive (stop + infinitive)

If we use it with infinitive, It's gonna be like stopping to do something or doing something such as:

  • Samira stopped to take her son.

And here we get to the end of our lesson today, through which we learn in detail about formula (gerund and infinitive).
