Our lesson today is one of the most important English lessons of all time because we will recognize the past participle of the verb, Which is a cornerstone of many tenses in English so we will recognize it as simple and we will touch on all the information that's going on about the different form of the verb in English.
First of all, we have to know that the verb in English has three forms and each form is related to a particular tense. In this lesson we will re
cognize these forms and in particular we will explain the ( Past participle ) of the verbs whether regular or irregular verbs.

First – Infinitive
We
mean this the verb in its original form without any thing such as:
Read
– play – watch – see – fly – draw – cut
The
infinitive verb is used in many tenses such as ( the future tense – simple
present tense (If the subject is not singular) ).
And
it also used after ( should – can – will – must …)
For
examples:
- Sandy will watch the movie after she studies her lesson.
- They can play handball after the school.
- I play chess with his brother every Monday.
Second – The verb in the past format
The
verb in the past is the second form of the verb and it is used in the past
tense.
The
form of the verb in the past varies according to the verb is regular or
irregular. If the verb is regular then we add to the verb ( ed ) for example:
- My mother cooked the lunch before she went to the gym.
- My team played the game very enthusiastically.
But
there are many verbs which called ( irregular verbs ) their form varies when
used in the past and it is not linked to a particular rule such as:
Drive
→ drove Find → found
Fly
→ flew Give → gave
For
examples:
- My father gave me school fees last night.
- Hana drove her car and was so happy.
Third – The past participle
The
past participle of the verb consider the most
form of the verb because it is used in many tenses and cases such as (
passive voice – perfect past ) so we need to recognize the past participle of
the most commonly used verbs in English.
Very
simply the situation in the past participle as the verb in the past .If the
verb is regular we add ( ed ) to the verb when we covert the verb to past
participle like:
Finish
→ finished add → added
For
example:
- the lesson had finished when Aya arrived.
Either
the verb is irregular then it has its own form such as:
Steal
→ stolen Sell → sold hide →hidden
For
example:
- The bag was stolen when I was on the beach .
In
order to make it easier and so that we can understand the right , we will
review the most important and most famous verbs in English with their three
forms in the following table.
Past participle | Past | Present |
Flown | Flew | Fly |
Felt | Felt | Feel |
Got | Got | Get |
Gone | Went | Go |
Had | Had | Have |
Known | Knew | Know |
Spent | Spent | Spend |
Taken | Took | Take |
Cut | Cut | Cut |
Drawn | Drew | Draw |
Written | Wrote |
Write |
In
the previous table, we have reviewed some irregular verbs in English, but we
noticed that some verbs have the same form in three tenses such as ( cut ).
We
also noted that there are several verbs that have the same form in the past and
the past participle such as ( Got – had
– spent ….)
And that's why we finished our lesson today after we got to know three forms of the verbs in English and when we use each of them.
